I read a scary thing the other day: women in their childbearing years account for the largest group suffering from depression in this country. According to PostpartumDepression.org, “Approximately 70% to 80% of women will experience, at a minimum, the ‘baby blues’. Many of these women will experience the more severe condition of postpartum depression or a related condition” AND “these numbers only...

There are so many little things about pregnancy, labor and postpartum that nobody tells you. Why? I think mostly because people forget (and that is why we are able to do it over and over again!) But when you're in the thick of it, it's frustrating to discover crazy new symptoms or surprises and think, "why did NOBODY warn me about this?!" I remember making mental notes throughout both my pregnanci...

The first night I started feeling some labor pains during my second pregnancy (turned out to be false labor pains), I realized I should probably start packing my bags for the hospital. I couldn't remember what I'd packed the last time around so I revisited my list and had a good giggle when I realized how many things I'd packed for my first pregnancy that I truly didn't need. Four pairs of underwe...

Have you seen any of those beautifully poignant photos of the last time a mother holds one child before having another? (like this one). I see these images and immediately weep. I think of the momentousness of this—that my sweet little boy and I are saying goodbye to a certain dynamic forever—and my heart aches.

This spring, we are expecting our second child.

Although we are thrilled, I'm also far...

My Environmental Resolutions in 2019

This past year, climate change felt scarier than ever. The environmental reports painted a very bleak picture for our planet's future and I started wondering if my children would grow to experience a New England without snow, among other things. For this and so many other reasons, I've decided I need to up my environmental efforts this year. I wish we would all...

Dear 2018,

You were the year I stopped breastfeeding my son, Bo. I’d never imagined nursing for 2 years and 10 months but I was proud and happy that I did. Our journey was ours and worked for us. We figured it out as we went along, together. I’ve learned with parenting that I feel most comfortable when I don’t try to impose expectations or arbitrary deadlines but just let things unfold naturally.

Just a quick post about the importance of good posture during pregnancy (and beyond). How you carry yourself can make a big difference in how the lower back feels, as well as the shoulders and neck. A little engagement of the core muscles can go a long way to keeping your back more supported, stronger and comfortable. In this video I demonstrate bad posture and good posture during pregnancy but ho...

I’ve been preparing myself for pregnancy for the past few months. No, I’m not announcing a pregnancy. I’m talking about PREPARING for pregnancy. Growing a human being is no joke— and our bodies and minds should ideally be as ready as possible. As a prenatal yoga instructor, I tend to see clients once they’ve gotten confirmation of pregnancy, and the majority wait until they’re nearing the end of t...

Did you know that video baby monitors emit more radiation than microwaves?

Until recently, I didn't. And I was raving about mine because I loved that it felt safer than the old school variety and I loved that I could watch my kid sleeping from any room in the house and even outside.

Did you know that portable phones and cell phones are some of the worst radiation emitters and that the fine print yo...
